Vol. 9 Issue 27

Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away! Come to the Hollywood Farmers Market this Saturday and place an order with Waltz’s Family Farm for fresh whole turkeys, legs and breasts. Two Oceans Seafood will be at the market with their selection of fresh restaurant quality frozen seafood. Stop by Blue Berwyn Farms and Montoya Family Farms for final fall crops, apples, apple cider and more. Bundle up and come out for produce, food, fun and more.
Here is a wonderful fall recipe:
Butternut Squash Soup
This is a thick, rich butternut squash soup with tons of flavor. Super easy, quick, and you can pick up most of the ingredients at the market.
Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 5 mins
2 tablespoons butter
1 small onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 medium carrot, chopped
2 medium potatoes, cubed
1 medium butternut squash – peeled, seeded, and cubed
1 (32 fluid ounce) container vegetable broth
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Nutmeg or pumpkin spice (optional)
Gather all ingredients.
Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat, and cook onion, celery, carrot, potatoes, and squash until lightly browned, about 5  minutes. Pour in enough vegetable broth to cover vegetables.
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer until all vegetables are tender, about 40 minutes.
Transfer soup to a blender and process until smooth. Return to the pot and mix in any remaining broth to reach desired consistency.
Season with salt and pepper. Optional seasoning- nutmeg or pumpkin spice
Serve hot and enjoy!

Just a reminder that our final market day is Saturday, November 18th.  We will have a Holiday Winter Market on Saturday, December 16th from 9am until 1pm.

Did you know we accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits so customers can purchase fresh produce and locally made products at our market? To use SNAP benefits, customers can swipe their EBT cards at our Maryland Market Money table. We will charge the card for any amount requested in exchange for tokens that can be spent with eligible vendors.  Through the Maryland Market Money program, the market will also match up to $30 in SNAP benefits spent at the market – so a $10 charge on a customer’s EBT card will give them $20 to spend!  Many of our vendors also accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks. Checks can be used to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, cut herbs, and honey. These checks are spent directly with vendors who are registered to accept the checks as payment, and then those vendors will write the customer a receipt. If the customer brings the receipt to the market table, we will match up to $10 in FMNP spending with additional Maryland Market Money tokens. Bringing a $10 FMNP check to the market can allow a customer to spend $20!

The College Park Community Food Bank and Hollywood farmers market are partnering on a canned food drive. Bring your unexpired canned goods to the market and leave them at the market management tent. Look for the tall white bag with the College Park Community Food Bank logo on it.
